- Engine Horsepower – directly affects processing rate.
- Infeed Size and Design – the size of the infeed opening directly affects how easily material will flow down to the hammermill, so the larger the better. This includes both the width of the infeed as well as the size of the opening at the end of the infeed leading to the hammermill.
- Hammermill Design – hammer design, number of hammers and hammer reach above the hammermill rotor or drum all directly affect the rate of production.
- Ease of Service – Horizontal grinders work hard and require a lot of maintenance, the easier they are to repair means they will be available to work more hours per day.
